Should Aaron Curry Be the #1 Pick?
So people always sleeping on us Deamon Deacons and this past year they had a great season and fellow linebacker, Aaron Curry is a top 5 pick, maybe even the #1 pick. My question is should Aaron be #1 pick for Detroit making him probably the highest Deacon drafted? even better than my pick?, and what do you think of the free agency that the JETS have done so far?

Thats what happens when you come from such a small school and one that only became a threat to be reckoned with (in football) of late. Curry should be the 1st pick based on talent alone...but the Lions have so many needs and are in desperate need of a face to their franchise which is usually a QB. You guys are definitely doin your thing in free agency...enjoy Lito, he's a hell of a talent. Don't let Darrelle get away with anything either...you gotta keep those Pitt guys in line...dude was crazy freshman year in Sutherland Hall haha.
-
I see him going to KC because they are going to a 3-4 and I think he will excell in that role.
As for the Jets, a great off-season which started the day we hired Ryan. Adding Scott, Leonhard and Sheppard to a potential top 10 defense was outstanding. I'm primed for this season! -
Hi Calvin, Im a die hard Jets fan as well and I am excited as ever to see what you guys can do on Defense this year with all the additions and especially a coach that I think will motivate instead of dictate in that of Rex Ryan. I truly think that the Jets have now put together a top 3 defense in the NFL and I can't wait to see you all out there destroying the Pats! As for Curry, I have to say that given the Lions draft history, He'll probably get passed up for an offensive player however I do think that KC will snag him up at the third pick. Lets go Jets!!!
-
i dont think Curry should go #1 overall... when you have the 1st pick, u dont waste it on a LB.... they can get a fine LB at pick #33, but they wont find a potential franchise QB or LT at that pick.... they should go Stafford, Jason Smith, or Eugene Monroe
i think Curry will go #3 to the Chiefs or #5 to the Browns -
Don't forget about Alfonso Smith. He will be playing on Sundays as well. Don't knock the small school, Wake is a powerhouse in sports especially when you consider that they are one of the smallest D-1 schools. A recent Orange Bowl appearance, Soccer National championship, great basketball program...this school deserves more recognition than it gets.

Hey Calvin, I am a die-hard Jets fan,
I love the moves the Jets have made so far, and I cannot wait to see you, Bart Scott and David Harris dominate the opponents. Lito Sheppard and Revis should be the best corner combo in the NFL and Jim Leonhard and Rhodes should be outstanding together. I also like that you guys brought back Tony Richardson who will help block for Leon and Thomas. Bringing Brandon Moore back was a very smart move, as he is probably the best run blocker on the Jets. Lastly, re-signing Brett Ratliff was a great call by Mike Tannenbaum and Rex Ryan because Ratliff led the AFC in passing yards in the pre-season. As for your Deamon Deacons, I think Curry will go number three to the Chiefs, because they got Mike Vrabel in the Matt Cassel trade. So, Vrabel will probably teach Curry when he gets to Kansas City. Hope all is well. Enjoy the off-season.
All the best,
-Steiny -
I think they need a QB
-
Curry SHOULD go #1 overall because Detroit needs the safest pick. The QBs are not that, and I think they can get an O-lineman later in the draft. Curry could be a starter for detroit for 10 years.
As far as the J-E-T-S. I love the off season work so far. I thought the Jets had great talent on the defensive side of the ball last season. Tannenbaum and Ryan went out and got guys that fit into the new coach's system, and that will help the current Jets roster adjust. I am looking forward to seeing some BIG THINGS next season Mr. Pace! haha. Best of luck.

Curry should definitley go # 1. Defense wins championships.
I think the jets did a good Job, bu we are stuck wtih the same problem as last year. We still don't have a QB. Its tiring being a Jets fan going into camp with these open comeptitions for QB.
Scott and Leonhard will definitley help improve our D and help make the players such as yourself have a smoother transition with the new defensive plays. I like the additions so far, and I think we could use another playmaker like Torry Holt on offense. What do you think? -
Defenses don't win championship when they are on the field for 45 minutes a game! Detroit Lions need a LT to get the passing and running game going and keep its defense off the field. A QB is needed but much later or better still not before next year.
-
How many Michigan guys you got there on defense? You guys relate to each other better cause you're from the same state? Psyched for the 2009 season!
-
Curry is an animal. I'm a freshman at Wake Forest and I've never seen such a pro ready player coming out of college. Smith is decent but nothing spectacular. Whoever doesnt take Curry will be shaking thei rheads in the future, although the Lions do have much bigger needs to address so he probably wont be first overall. He is far and away the best talent available though.
-
Detroit is going to take Stafford at #1. The Rams are going to take Smith from Baylor to relace Pace, so that leaves K.C. in line to draft Curry at number 3. Scott Pioli will not pass on an athlete like Curry.
-
Hey Calvin! Big Jets fan, loved what u did last year, and with REX's defense think your numbers will be even better this year. I want to know how excited you are to be playing for REX and this upgraded defense? It should be more aggressive, attack based; rather than having u drop in coverage. I love all the moves the jets did this offseason, just wish they could of traded coles, just get a little back for him. I think the team is going into the Draft perfectly to pick the best available player. I would also endorse the possible future signing of Tory Holt if this comes true in the future week or two.
On Curry- he seems like a beast, the lions can really use some key defensive weapons- he would be a nice addition. After the many years of WR's and their previous top QB pick failing, as well as hearing mixed opinions on stafford and sanchez- it might be wise to draft Curry! -
Calvin - your new LB partner - Bart Scott loves playing a "Violent" brand of football because Coach's system makes you feel like you'll always have people backing you up - no more read and react! You ready to step it up and force the issue in a violent way and play at 110% speed no matter what?
-
Big Jets fan. Thanks for a great 1st year in green and white. We are looking forward to seeing what you are going to do under Rex Ryan. Curry and Alphonso had a tremendous year for the Deacons. Based on production and recent combine workouts, Curry should go 1st especially to a team that has just hired a defensive coach. He could be their leader for a long time. This might be the 1st year that you actually have two Wake Forest guys go in the 1st round which would be a tremendous boost for that program.
Best of luck Calvin and Go Jets! -
no not for the lions
-
I think he certainly has the potential to go #1, but the Lions will prob. take a QB.
-
They have Drew Henson and Daunte Culpepper, but not much there. Drew Stanton from Michigan St. is also on the roster, but he is unproven as well. Stafford is an NFL ready QB and has all of the tools like Matt Ryan. Henson or Stanton could be gone with Stafford coming in and then having Culpepper as either the starter or veteran backup.
-
Mr Pace:
One question please: When will you go into the ELITE DE?LB class and get 12-14 SACKS? -
when someone invents a time machine, specifically designed to go back 10 years.
-
I dont think that curry will be the number one pick. Linebackers rarely are picked 1 overall. I think they go tackle or qb, leaving curry to fall to number 3.
i really like the jets offseason moves. i think they could cap off a great offseason by snagging tory holt -
Curry is the closest thing to a sure bet. You can not go wrong with a LB with the talent this guy has. He is as aggressive as they come and could fit in well with any NFL defense.
Jets are looking very good in free agency. Your coach is my early candidate for coach of the year...
Keep doing your thing. -
Curry is the best player in the draft, but he won't go #1 because the Lions are taking Stafford.
The Jets FA moves were very good. Bart Scott is an animal. He's a big presence on that defense now. Big hitter and big trash talker: just what the Jets D needs! Leonhard and Sheppard solidify the secondary. Jets defense will be outstanding if there's pressure coming from somewhere (Gholston??) -
Calvin,
Aaron Curry is the best talent in the draft but Detroit needs to take Eugene Monroe in order to establish that offensive line. By taking the appropriate steps in establighing their offensive line they can then draft a Franchise QB next year. I would rather see them take Curry over Stafford if they choose to veer away from the offensive line.
As for the Jets this year, I dont think I have ever been so amped to see a defense play. With Bart Scott and David harris in the middle, you on the outside and then Bryan Thomas and Gholston rotating... This is destined to be the best linebacking core in the NFL. Gholstons been facing a lot of criticism, I want to see how he respondes, especially now that the pressure is on for him to perform with an unreal linebacking core in place.
However, dude you need to tell Rex and Tenenbaum to draft a QB in either the first or second rounds. If not Sanchez, Stafford or Freeman; at least take Pat White to have a 3 way competition for the starting job. Not too confident at the QB position with Ratliff and Clemons going into next year. -
Mike07039: Calvin its great to have you on the jets. I love your motor and it was obvious that when used correctly you are one damn hell of a play maker.
Curry has what it takes to be the BEST immediate contributor on a team from this years draft but I still do not think he will be taken first overall. I think the Lions will take Jason Smith or the other Smith, maybe stafford.
As far as jets offseason goes, my beloved jets have done a great job so far. Bart Scott is a beast and will help tremendously, Lito Sheppard is a cornerback who has a knack for the ball and is a lights out hitter (think justin miller but if he had a brain) and leonard is the wayne chrebet of defenses. Good to see us building on what we have had last year.
Lastly, Kellen Clemens DOES have what it takes to lead this team. My 2 cents -
I don't think that your boy go's number 1 to the Lions, they have so many needs, they need to start with a franchise guy, Stafford is that man, they could go to the line and take a QB with there 2nd first round pick. As far as the Jets FA, could it of gone better? Lito Shepphard, Bart Scott, and Jim Leonhard......filled most areas of need, Scott is a great coverage linebacker and the perfect compliment to David Harris, Leonhard will do all the grit and let Kerry Rhodes go ball hunting, and Lito Shepphard will force teams to not lock onto one side of the field. Revis is a shut down corner, he needed another on the other side, Shepphard has the potential to do that, you must be real excited to be playing with this defense next season.

hey Calvin, JetsFan4Ever here - will limit my comments to FA. Luv the moves, I CRAVE a defense that at-TACKS - this bull about read'n'react may work with the also-rans in this league, but when you're going up against a top quality offense, it just gives them the time to pick a defense apart. Like John Madden used to say - "Prevent defense... the only thing it does is prevent you from winning!"
I really think the following should be the teams next moves: quality DT who is capable of spelling KJ; a pass-rushing DE (Vernon? Hope so...) and on the offense side, a stud WR that can stretch the field, more depth on the O-line and at least 8 CARRIES for LEON per game!
Keep up the great work, Calvin - I expect to see you in opposing backfields on a routine basis this year...
JRCoGuard -
Curry is a beast... Patrick Willis-esque
The Lions would be insane to pick Stafford over Curry.. well, it is the Lions, so... -

hasnt detroit suffered enough mistakes????
If I was detroit i would take this guy, and build a team around him.. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!
but, really they havent had much luck when it comes to QB'S .. and they could really do some damage this draft too! -
Curry is the hype of this year's draft. You've got to be kidding making him #1.
-
Hey, hes way worth the #1 pick hope he slide to # 21 tho, lol
-
If he slid to 21 the eagles still wouldnt get him! .. But we all know hes going to go to one of the first 4 teams
-
you the man Calvin!!
- Your boy Curry is a monster, but i don't see him going #1. my opinion isn't talent wise its based on need. the lions are pretty good at LB right now, so i see them taking a QB at #1. don't forget they have another 1st rounder so look for them to take a LB then. Maybe James Laurinaitis could fall? -
I don't think it makes sense to take a linebacker at #1 only because it is going to tie up an unreasonable amount of cap space. If Curry goes first, Detroit will have to pay him more than the highest paid linebackers like Ray Lewis, Bart Scott, etc. It doesn't sound like a great idea to tie up that much cap space in that position unless they view him as potentially being an all time great.
If the rookie wage scale was different, I'd say take Curry if that's who they like. But under the current rules, it makes way more sense to take a tackle or a quarterback if there's one who is worthy of the first pick. -
Aaron Curry will be a top five pick no doubt. I don't believe the Lions will go after him because they will probably go after a quarterback. If he slips to five I know Mangini will take him into Cleveland. In fact I would not be suprised with it at all.
-
I think if everyone we have so far does their Job we will be in great shape. as far as a QB i know we have him in the house. i have planty of faith in Rattlif.
a tall WR and an amazing OLineman would not hurt.
so far so goooooooood. -
the lions have a ton of holes to fill, they are lacking talent in almost every area of their football team.
the organization makes horrible draft decisions every year.
they trade away all there talented players
Shaun Rogers, Roy Williams, Dre Bly, Boss bailey, whos next Ernie Sims
Aaron Curry in my i eyes is the best player in the draft, and probably the safe pick, or the most likely not to be a bust. Lions need help but they need to draft from the inside out.... they need to go O-line, like Jason Smith from Baylor, or d-line later in the draft, they obvious need a quarter back, but i think they can possibly get a quarter back later, or they they can just go Stafford and then O-line with there second 1st round pick, -
Diehard Lions fan I want Curry #1
He can be the face of a franchise regardless of position, people in the future will remember Ray Lewis in the same light as we think of the original LT. -
Do I think Curry should be the first pick of the draft... Sure why not?
I'm still a lil' pissed off at the Jets for getting Jim Leonhard!! haha
Go Raiders!! -
Their most logical selection should be an offensive tackle either Jason Smith or Eugene Monroe, they are safe picks and something u can feel good investing number 1 pick money in. As for Aaron Curry I watched plently of Wake Forrest games and never once heard his name mentioned. U heard more about Alphonso Smith, I just dont know for someone who wasnt that big in College(In my opinion) should be a number 1 pick.
-
Curry should go number one. Stafford and Sanchez are mediocore qb's in a horrible qb draft. Take the linebacker and then with pick 33 take the Lt be cause tackle is deep this year. The Offseason finally proved the Jets have the right coach and management to lead this team. Calvin you need to kick in some teeth this year or I promise you Broadway Joe will sleep with Hoffa for his deal with the devil
-
Agree that Curry should be #1
-
he won't
-
HEY CALVIN,
I actually Hope Curry goes 17th.LOL
We have done nice in free agency I think we need a little more power at the DE position. But I can't wait to see you unleashed in the Rex Ryan Defense. No More Read and react crap. Just go out and play good old fashioned Kick ASS Defense no mercy ever.
By the way A friend of mine and my sons football coach is a Wake Forest Alumni. And a former NFL Player Gary Baldinger His Brother Brian Might have gone there too I'm not sure but gary definately did.
Maybe You can Come to massapequa Long Island this summer for Baldingers Annual Football Clinic He donates the money back to the league. We'd Love to have you there.
Brian Comes as well.
By the way your one of my sons favorite players! All I know is I'm glad your on our side.
Go Wake Forest!!!! -
the Jets need to sign either a WR or a QB before the draft, this way they know for sure what to do with their first round pick. I think they need to make a move for Jay Cutler. Give em a first round pick, kelen clemmens, and somebody off the defense. Then, there'll still be a decent receiver in the second round. But bottom line is, somebody needs to replace LC and Brett Favre.
